Many often wonder if there are alternative ways to help soothe some of the all to common skin issues associated with newborns and babies. We just aren’t certain anymore what the actual ingredients are in the soaps and lotions we are using on our little ones, which can be quite a scary thought! Take a look at some of the ingredients on one of the most recognized baby lotions on the market:
Fragrance, Carbomer, p-Anisic Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Xanthan Gum, Ethylhexylglycerin, Pentaerythrityl Tetraditbutyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate, Red 33
I don’t know about you.. but I have no idea what the greater majority of those words are, or where in nature they are derived from. What many people today aren’t aware of are all of the uses and benefits of Organic, Un-refined Coconut Oil that are completely safe for baby (and everyone else in the family)!
Coconut oil is loaded with many different health benefits including its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties. Not only is Coconut oil the safer and natural route, it will also save you money in the long run by not having to buy a lotion, potion, or cream for every single infant concern! Below are just a few ideas of how you can incorporate Coconut Oil into your baby’s routine:
Cradle Cap: Massage some Coconut Oil onto baby’s scalp, especially the area affected. Let the oil stay on for some time (you can put a cap baby on to minimize messiness) then use a baby brush with soft bristles to brush off the flakes. Once the flakes are brushed off, you can rinse baby’s hair with lukewarm water.
Eczema: Coconut oil is a good hydrating agent, massage baby with Oil before or after bath time to provide adequate moisture and hydration.
Diaper Rash: Apply a layer of Coconut Oil on your baby’s diaper area after bath time each day. Make sure to massage in the groin area and especially in the folds of the skin where the rash first appears.
Smoother Hair: Wet baby’s hair during bath time and apply a small amount of coconut oil evenly onto the hair. Alternatively, you can also massage into baby’s hair at night and wash it off in the morning.
Dry and Chapped Lips: Take a clean Q-tip, or a clean finger, and dip in in a little Coconut Oil, apply to the lips as well as around the lips. This is especially helpful in the colder months when dry skin is a common occurrence.
Insect Bites: Apply Coconut Oil gently to baby’s skin on and around the insect bite.
Baby Wash: Take equal amounts of Coconut Oil and Glycerin Soap and mix well together. Apply it all over your baby’s body at bath time. Gently massage to take out any dirt and wash off with regular bath water. You can also add a a few drops of essential oils for scent and additional benefits.
Baby Acne: Apply Coconut Oil that you have warmed between your hands and apply all over baby’s face.
Chest Rub: Take 1-2 drops of an essential oil of your choice and add to 1 T. of Coconut Oil. Rub on baby’s chest as a natural and safe alternative.
Teething Pain: Take a little amount of Coconut Oil on your fingers and gently dab on baby’s gums.
